LA LIMPIA - A field recording turned into SOUND ART for audiophiles by KALAM BALAM

Updated: Jun 27

This is a limpia ceremony in Mexico City. The Danzantes follow the rhythms of the huéhuetl drum, creating an energy circle that attracts the spirits of the Aztec gods with their dances and the rattling sounds of the ayoyotls attached to their feet. The priest, smudges with Copal a person to clear their aura while rubs around the body a branch of sacred herbs, commonly Ruda. The perfumed branch of herbs, collects the bad energies that afflicts the patient and restores the good energy flow. Then asks the patient to scrub the soles of their feet on the herbs to remove completely the bad energies when the limpia is over.
